Carla and I have been thrifting together since we were 15, meeting many times a week at the Bargain Barn in Santa Cruz. At 17, we were both working at Front Street Thrift store in Santa Cruz and talking the owner into opening a vintage section of the shop. Naturally, we had to sneak a little thrifting into our vacation despite having 5 kids with us. We gave the kids each a dollar, which I later regretted when I saw what they picked out. Wilder picked some plastic Hot Wheels crap that was probably broken and he later told me, "wasn't very good." Eero was the most sensible and picked a useful ball. And Bijou picked an hour glass set in a thick tray of shellac with dried flowers. It is so gross and weird. I think she just didn't want to leave empty handed. Anyway, the crap I came home with was worth it for these gems. I was in need of a side table and a few days after I bought it, I saw something similar at West Elm for $399. Score!
