We thought we must have gone off route on our drive to Les Vallée des Singes, an animal park and monkey preserve an hour and a half drive from us. We were driving on narrow one lane country roads with farm fields, passing the occasional stone farmhouse when all of a sudden the grand entrance appeared on the horizon. We had expected a zoo and were delighted to find free range monkeys and the staff passing out zipped tote bags at the entrance for your belongings. The monkeys have a reputation for grabbing your loose keys or sunglasses. The signs warned you to not touch the monkeys, but to just watch them entertain themselves in the trees. Within 10 minutes, we witnessed a smaller toddler try to pet a monkey to which the monkey shrieked and lunged at him. It was a good lesson for the boys to follow the rules the rest of the time we were at the park. If you find yourself near Poitiers in southwest France, I recommend a visit.
