Much to mine and my mom's dismay, my kid's favorite activity while we were in Venice was feeding the pigeons, and they demanded it daily. It was a convenient and affordable activity with a .60euro baguette and a short walk from our apartment was all that was required for an hour worth of fun. The challenge was mentally letting go of those negative thoughts of avian influenza, bird poop crusted claws digging into their only jacket, claws ripping a stitch out of their newly knitted hats made with love and TIME by mom and the inevitable case of the grumps when the baguette was gone. It took a solid two days before Bijou discovered the trick for having a pigeon land on you, holding the baguette in your hand rather than tossing small pieces on the ground. In the beginning, she looked on in awe (I gawked) at the Chinese tourist covered head to arm in pigeon while her boyfriend snapped photos with his fancy photo equipment.
Wilder was soon in on the action too while Eero, my sensitive one, preferred to keep them at a distance. Hands were doused in hand-sanitizer and the jackets wiped down with baby wipes after each outing to Piazza San Marco but I'm pretty sure the memories made bonding with the birds will be the ones they savor the most from our week in Venice.
