Mulled Wine

I love sangria in the summertime so I have no idea why I had never tried mulled wine before coming to France.  For the last month, "Vin Chaud" (hot wine) is listed on almost every chalkboard menu I pass by.  It was also offered at the Ronsenac Christmas market we attended last weekend so I tried my first cup.  It was sweet and spicy and surely not my last.  In the meantime, I will be experimenting with different recipes at home this holiday.  Please share your favorite recipe if you have one.

Mulled Wine

1 bottle of red wine (merlot or cabernet)

1 orange, juice and zest

3 cinnamon sticks

2 star anise

3 cloves

1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg

1/4 tsp. all spice

1-2 Tbsp. honey

Warm the wine in a saucepan over low heat.  Add all the ingredients and allow to simmer for 30 minutes or more. Strain and garnish each glass with a cinnamon stick and a piece of orange peel. Serve warm.
