I had read about Picard, a French frozen food chain, before we moved abroad. It is supposedly well regarded by the French people, although I have yet to ask a local. There weren't too many customers on the rainy morning I visited, but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste of the things I purchased. The meals seem less salted, and less processed than Trader Joe's. The store included frozen meats, vegetables, fruits and desserts and of course your French staples... rabbit, duck, escargot, eclairs, and macaroons. I went for the fajita pack (I'm desperate for some good Mexican food) which was certainly satisfactory although inferior to Dona Tomas or Tacubaya., a vegetable lasagna which was enjoyed by all 5 of us (score!), and some mini quiches and lemon tarts which were as good as any fancy Bay Area bakery would serve.
All and all, I give Picard a thumbs up and look forward to my bi-monthly visit, it's a 30 minute drive away.
